Endemic to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, Macassar ebony is also called Golden Ebony or Coromandel. It is also found in Malaysia where it is called Kajol martem.
Macassar ebony is a large tree that can reach 40 meters in height.
The name of this wood comes from the main seaport of the island, Makassar, from where it was exported. This wood was for a long time imported in mass by Japan which used it for the manufacture of traditional houses and in particular for poles.
It was also highly appreciated by European cabinetmakers in previous centuries.
Nowadays, due to the rarity of beautiful pieces, it is only used for the manufacture of prestigious furniture, small cutlery, archery, armory, billiard cues or luxury pens.
It takes a long time and is difficult to dry, which adds to the rarity of beautiful pieces.
It is widely used in violin making, particularly for the fingerboards of guitars and other stringed instruments.
It is a prestigious wood, very hard, dark brown to chocolate brown in color with wide, marked black veins, sometimes marbling.
Mechanism in high quality 12 C 27 carbon stainless steel from the Forges de Thiers, the world capital of cutlery.
Completely handmade.
Handmade guilloche feather pattern on the spring.
